Didem Akman: in 80 days, I have reached the situation that is reached after 150, 160 days of hunger strike

As of the date of the translation of this article, political prisoners Didem Akman and Özgür Karakaya are on the 92nd day of the hunger strike till death(Death Fast) that they are conducting demanding justice. Political prisoner Didem Akman, in a telephone conversation, held a few days ago, said the following:

“Inside the cell, one cannot breathe, one cannot receive the necessary amount of sunlight. She/he can’t move enough. She/he is forced to stay in a humid environment. Along with all this, the psychological effect on the person caused by the stress caused by the constant inspections carried out every 15 minutes, literally melts the person day after day. ”

With these words she drew attention to the effect of isolation on the person.

“In general, when we stop eating, the difference in weight loss between me and a person in a normal prison ward is 150, 160 days. I have reached to the situation I reached after 150, 160 days of hunger strike in just 80 days.” With these words she tried to show how serious her condition was at the moment. In the telephone conversation, Didem Akman also spoke about the attacks on the funeral of Ibrahim Gokcek and the struggle for justice of Mustafa Kocak.

“They (the fascists) live in their hell of dishonor. To attack a funeral. What can be disgusting than that? When Mustafa started his resistance, we said that he was not just fighting for justice, he was defending the justice of the people, against the policies of turning people into informants. Attacks on funerals are real proof of that. “

“Everyone here, both the prison guards and the doctors, keep saying that. They are aware of one thing. “You are progressing very fast” mentioning the weight loss. I do not have the opportunity to weigh myself on a scale regularly. But in the end, my ribs are already can be “read”. Compared to people going on a hunger strike in a prison ward, my melting is much faster. That shows I’m fine, my friend, the isolation cell is killing the human. It’s that simple. One cannot breathe in this cell. He cannot receive the required amount of sunlight. He can’t move enough. He is forced to stand in a humid environment. Along with all this, the psychological effect on the person caused by the stress caused by the constant checks performed every 15 minutes, literally melts the person day after day.

That is, it is no coincidence that among my demands is the abolition of the regime of serving life sentences and the duration of these sentences. What do they say to those sentenced to life in prison? We will get your meal three times per day, you will spend your whole life in a cell until you die. Usually, when we stop eating, the difference in weight loss between me and a person in a prison ward is 150, 160 days. I have reached to the situation that is reached after 150, 160 days of hunger strike in just 80 days. This is proof of how these isolation cells melt, kill, and destroy the human.

I said I wrote applications to both the prison administration and the prison prosecutor. To increase the time I have the right to go out in the yard next to the cell, also to transfer a person to take care of me in my cell. Because I am forced to do everything myself. I do the cleaning, which takes 15-20 minutes, in 2 hours. For now, I have the strength to deal with these things, but it all costs effort and takes away my energy. And quite naturally, my weight loss increases even more. It doesn’t take long, and they come to me and tell me you’ve lost a lot of weight, and so on. The prison administration, by not providing the necessary conditions for a normal existence, practically says: Die, die in the fastest possible way. This is an assassination attempt. This is more than clear.

They do not give a scale to weigh me. I tell them, give me a scale, I will weigh myself, there is no need for you to know how much I have lost. They don’t give me a scale, they tell me they won’t give it to me. They told me that they would give me a scale whenever I wanted to weigh myself, I had to weigh myself under their direct supervision. They do this because they are also interested in how many kilograms I have lost. They don’t admit it, but it’s obvious to them. I tell them to keep the scales with me. Because they don’t give me a scale, I don’t know how much I weigh at the moment.

Usually, I wear size S clothes. But nothing can be understood from the size of the clothes alone. Because you know, some clothes are unisex. The shape and size of each garment are different though. I measure myself with the meter every week, I try to make some conclusions by myself. How much each part of my body has lost weight. But compared to people who are in a prison ward, I lost weight very quickly, this is obvious to everyone. You know, the prison guards stay quarantined for 2 weeks, one team stays each time, then they change. When the other team comes, every new team that comes, looks at me in horror, and asks me, “What happened to you?”

The news constantly came from the newspapers, and on the television, about attacks on the funeral of Ibrahim (Gökçek). Morality, mind, values, or rather the lack of those that are observed there until all these changes, some people close their doors and say to themselves “this is not about us, let’s not mess up in this”, but their thinking is the same as those who attack the grave. Their thinking is the same. This shows that our struggle is not only for justice, but also for the preservation of the true values of the people. What’s worse than attacking a grave? Attacks on the funeral are something beyond even hostility and hatred. The millennial evolution of humanity is based on some ethical values. And the people who do all this claim in front of everyone that they are orthodox Muslims. Most likely they are fasting now during Ramadan.

And in the evening they sit at the table for iftar in the name of Allah. They (the fascists) live in their hell of dishonor. To attack a funeral. What’s can be disgusting than that. When Mustafa started his resistance, we said that he was not just fighting for justice, he was defending the justice of the people, against the policies of turning people into informants. Attacks on funerals are real proof of this. This is resistance in the name of justice and dignity. And also, the protection of the values of the people is equivalent to the protection of the songs of the people. Equivalence is with defending justice. That is, they are all interconnected. And the people see all this in these attacks. I send greetings to all, I love you all. Our resistance continues with full determination. After Ibrahim ended the hunger strike and the resistance from the prison administration came to visit me, filled with anticipation: “What happened, are you ending now?” Ah, I replied, “My lawyers’ demands have not been accepted yet. My demands have not been accepted either. ” We will continue until the demands of all participants in the resistance are accepted. I send my love and respect to everyone.”
