On October 30, 2020, the city of Izmir, located on the Aegean coast of Turkey, was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale. According to the information of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) available at 08:13(local time) on November 2, 2020, 79 people lost their lives and injured 962 people were injured in the earthquake. In every earthquake, flood, in all disasters, it is our people who are killed. The wounds of this disaster will be healed with the solidarity and unity of the people.
Turkey has repeatedly proven that it fully meets the definition of “the country of earthquakes”. The earthquake in the region of the Sea of Marmara in 1999 was the biggest in the history of the country and is Istanbul, the largest city almost all buildings were destroyed. The people were dying from under the ruins of their homes. In the latest earthquake in the city of Izmir, similar scenes are observed.
Is the earthquake to blame for the victims?
As the Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry posed for the pro-government media on the ruins of an apartment building, the local people, who were accused by religious fanatics and reactionaries of being “atheists”, “gyaur” (a word used by Ottomans for all non-Muslim), tried to help each other. The hotels, the prayer houses of the Alevis, opened their doors to house the homeless, and the restaurants opened their kitchens to them. Even a dog managed to save a human life. But only the government of the fascist AKP (the ruling party in Turkey) is not concerned with human lives but is wondering how to give better poses in front of the cameras. After all, they do not die, they are not injured. The government does nothing but repeat the learned and painfully worn-out clichés such as: “We will help the city to recover”, “We will take the necessary measures”. After every earthquake, after every disaster, they repeat the same phrases and do absolutely nothing.
It is not the earthquake, however, that is to blame for people’s bodies being buried under the ruins of their destroyed homes. Not the natural disaster, but the fascist power of the AKP kills. They are the ones who ordered the progressive architects who were serving the people to be fired from their job places. They are the ones who most shamelessly said, “Well, nothing will happen, if there are missing a dozen bricks from the wall.” They are the ones who hire their obedient cadres with fake diplomas and bribes.
