The Statement of Resit Sari who is on death fast outside in shantytown Armutlu, Istanbul:
The house that we are now in has been pinpointed as the ?House of Death? by some TV channels and newspapers. We have sent three of our lives to eternity from this house, and we will continue to die as long as the state does not actualize our demands and provide an environment in which we can pursue and develop our thoughts along with our humane and democratic rights. Dying is not our preference and the deaths will cease once the state actualizes our demands.
The state, which is supposed to be responsible for the safety of the lives of all people in and out of prisons, is now, instead of fulfilling this duty and after massacring unprotected people with bullets and bombs, crippling the people who are presuming the Death Fast resistance, by chaining them to beds from hands and feet at hospitals where they have been forcefully taken, by fettering their necks when the former does not suffice, and by forcefully intervening in the name of ?Bringing Them Back to Life?. The state is beating and torturing people to make them give up the struggle. The state is transforming them into individuals who have lost their memory and who cannot even fulfill their most basic daily needs. The state is creating dead people without tombs.
Yet the state continues to commit crimes. It has started to leave those people it has made into the “living dead” at hospital doors by ?postponing their sentences? with the panic of its guilt that has surfaced. Newspapers and TV channels announce all of this as ?the release of inmates who give up the Death Fast?. It is very clear what the state wants to do. It is killing, devastating. It is crippling with forced intervention. When, despite these, it cannot terminate the resistance, the state is trying to make use of the relationship between families and their children and to direct the emotional pressure of families upon those in resistance. At the point where none of these suffices, the state offers bribes by showing the possibility of release. It plans thus to weaken the resistance and to get rid of it. In fact, the state knows best itself that this road is a dead-end because our demands are as vital and impossible to be given up as life itself. Today, we are left with nothing else but to further die, as we defend our demands against the state?s maneuvers, which are full of lies and violence and which aim at smashing our resistance.
On May 11, new people have joined those who have started the Death Fast Resistance on October 20 in prisons and after the massacre of December 19-22. The fifth, sixth, seventh groups are also on their way.
The Death Fast Resistance, which also continues outside the prisons for the first time in the world, is further strengthening the resistance by announcing the new Death Fast resistors. The resistance is portraying its determination once again.
We are dying to live and to make people live. We will continue to die in order to defend life and for our thoughts. If the state really wants to put an end to the resistance, it has to take solid steps toward the realization of our demands.
This requires:
a. The conditionless abolition of isolation.
The changing of Article 16, Execution Judging, Prison Tracking Commissions consist of deceit. Isolation cannot be abolished without making architectural alterations and closing down the one- and three-person cells. Nor can it be achieved without allowing the inmates and convicts to live together in the absence of any conditionality. Isolation has to be ended.
b. The restrictions and practices that have been brought about to destroy our thoughts should be terminated.
c. No one who calls himself human can deny that our demands are humane, right, legitimate, democratic and vital.
d. Forced intervention is torture. It is a crime to cripple people. So many people have been crippled under torture and put into a condition of having no past and of not being able to think. The torture of forced intervention has to be terminated.
We are determined? Either we live like human beings in this country, or we die.
The state is solely responsible from all the deaths.
Anybody who remains silent against this terror is responsible in the face of history. Those who call themselves human beings should be able to have a clear conscience about having lived with honor when they look at their pasts in the future.
